Does the Length of Domain Registration Affect Your Search Engine Position!
There was a rumour going round some time ago that Google takes the registration period of a domain name into account when ranking a new website.
Basically a longer period of say 10 years tells your visitors (and Google) that you’re serious and in it for the long haul.
If you get a chance to read the patents Google submitted for their search algorithm, you’ll see that length of registration is listed, so it very well could be a factor. But the chances are that if they do count it the impact given will be very minimal as it doesn’t tell them anything about the quality of your site or it’s relevance to a specific query.
Still even if it counts for very little it’s another point in my favour, so I shall be extending the registration period on Namecake for another five years.
If you see me at the top of google tomorrow for “Domain Names” you’ll know it works a treat.

Yes that is correct, domains that are “aged” and have any history behind them do get extra ranking points.
James, I agree that domain registration probably has minimal SEO benefit but what likely has important SEO impact is the length of time the domain is in the search engine index.
Personal experience bears that out when buying underdeveloped websites that have been indexed for years. They, once better developed, rapidly gain traffic without any “sandbox” effect.
So hopefully by registering for 5 years, it will encourage you to maintain a continuous presence in the search engine index and that will definitely be well worth it. All the best
