How to Start your Own Online Business

Thursday, May 15, 2008

Starting your own business is a stressful enterprise and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

You have to find an area to sell your product or services, as well as hiring people and organizing distribution of your product/services. Thankfully, the internet has become a breeding ground for new businesses, and gives you a chance to look like and compete with the big boys.

Online businesses are a great and easy way to sell your product, or your services. They make a lot of the hard work like invoicing, and accounting simple with a lot of the computer based and web run services that are available to you.

The best part is, you can have a huge business that you can run from your home office or bedroom, and conduct business while you’re in your pajamas if you felt the need!

To start online, you of course need something to sell in the first place. If you’re selling something like t-shirts, or jewellery, make sure that you have a definite and fair price for the object that you’re selling, far in advance from beginning to register and host your own website to sell the products.

If you’re selling your cleaning services, or business services, also make sure you have a clear list of prices and the several options available for the services that you’re selling.

You then need to find a way to host your website that you wish to sell your products/services on. There are several websites that offer hosting and an easy shopping-cart option for selling, and buying products. Entrepreneur.com is a great site, which allows you to buy ‘marketplace’ space online, in which you can upload photos of your products, show the pricing, the terms and conditions as well as the shopping-cart option which makes payment a breeze.

You can buy the space on a monthly basis, or organize a contract plan if you envision your business needed an annual contract.

If you do not wish to run your business through a business host like entrepreneur, then you may wish to contact someone that is knowledgeable on the layout, and the necessary items you need to include in order for you to buy and sell things through your webpage.

The most important thing to remember is you will need to contact an accountant to organize getting a business number for your online business, and organize the way to calculate tax on certain items and to calculate the tax on the money you will hopefully receive from the profits of your business.

Without doing these things you may find yourself in huge trouble with the local tax office when they do their yearly audits. Online businesses and small businesses tend to attract a lot of attention when the yearly audits are conducted, usually because of the amount of internet and tax fraud that is committed each year.

After you are officially a business you can start selling through your website. Do not forget to include payment options like bank transfer, credit card or paypal onto your website, as it’s going to allow payment to be easy.

You will also need to investigate how long postage is going to take, and to where exactly you wish to send your items.

If your country has specifications on customs and how far you are willing to send your products without the waiting time being too long, then you may wish to restrict how far you send your packages.

For example, if it’s going to take 3 months for your package to arrive to the person who ordered it, you may want to just take their location out of the equation completely.

If you’re selling a product, be sure to include well taken photographs of the items you’re selling, to ensure the customer that they’re getting what they ordered.

If it’s a service you’re selling, you may also want to contact people to get genuine testimonials about your service, so a potential customer might be more likely to believe you and the status of your services.

Don’t make up testimonials, they always sound lame and cheesy and could end up with your in some trouble for fraud.

Here is a quick checklist to make sure you’ve got the basics for starting an online business:

  • Register your domain name, and contact your accountant regarding a business number, and the ways to calculate your tax on your retail items, and your own income
  • Set a definite list of your products, and organize how many you wish to produce within a weekly basis to avoid supply and demand situations
  • Organize your layout of your website, as well as the process of payment. Try and include as many hassle free payment options as possible, as it may be a more viable option for some people, than others.
  • Once your website is running smoothly (Always conduct a few test runs first!) start to upload photos of your products. If you’re not selling a product, but rather a service, commission people who have genuinely been a fan of your service to provide you with a real testimonial. Do not use a fake testimonial.
  • After your first few sales, make sure that you’ve done all the numbers and calculated everything correctly. Don’t oversell or over book, don’t over charge, and make sure you’re always completely honest with your online customers.

The previous tips are only a simple version and it will require further investigation and a few meetings with your accountant to smooth out the finer details. Hopefully these tips will get you on your way to owning your own successful business. Goodluck!
