Time to let the Domains that aren’t paying their way drop!
Every name in our portfolios has been registered because we think we can make money off it. The sad thing is not all of them will sell. A few of them may pay their way with parking income, but even that is unlikely.
So the others just sit there burning a hole in our pockets as we wait for the big payday to come along.
Now I’m not going to tell you what your strategy should be, only what I’m doing going forwards and that is to let all of the names I don’t think are good enough to drop. It’ll probably be about 100 to 150 in total and all of them were hand regs.
So we’re looking at just over $1000 in savings on renewals. Sure I may have sold one of them and been able to pay for the others, but why would I want to do that. In times like these I want to be lean and mean with cash on the side. Not worrying about the fat I should have shed in the first place.
I think a problems quite a few domainers have is that they fall in love with their names. They see the potential in each and every one of them, but it’s this mindset that will bleed you dry in the end.
Because at the end of the day we’re in business and all businesses need to make a profit if they are to survive. (unless you’re a bank
So they get ruthless, they come down hard on suppliers, let staff go, cut advertising, etc.. and that’s what we have to do.
Think of your domain as a salesman. He might be a great guy, but If he isn’t making any sales he’s just an expense. There’s nothing wrong with him, but you can’t afford to keep him around. It’s that simple.
Going forwards I think we’ll be seeing a lot of the faddish type domains appearing in the drops, such as the lower quality LLLL.coms. As I can’t for the life of me see any value in names like: xqzh.com (maybe I’m missing something here.)
It’s also worth remembering you might get something for them on the forums. If you have a large amount of names you could offer them as a cheap package deal.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

For the domains you want to drop - you should first try to sell them, even for few bucks or for example flat fee $10-20 each. Somewhere there somebody may want to buy it.
And good point - some domainers are in love with their names. It’s very dangerous - as each love can make a lot of damage
I am doing something very similar with my portfolio
Buydomains is a good place to sell your (soon to expire) domains in bulk
You may be able to get $20 -$30 per domain.
I’m doing the same. Letting go of those domains that just aren’t cutting it. If someone else can do better with them, so be it ;).
If you’ve got any interesting names you’re going to drop, let me know! I might buy if cheap (super cheap)!
Thanks for the comments guys.
Patrick - i’ve had a few conversations with Buydomains in the past - i won’t be speaking with them again after hetting offered a few hundred $ for my LLL.coms and CC.coms
Sammy - before expiration date i’ll shoot you a mail with some of the names i’m going to let go.
Dump em… All of em :p
Hit me up with some of the names you’re dropping also. I agree that you should at least try to do a firesale on the forums or something. At least you’ll recover some of your investment that way.
